Los Angeles - Step Up Strikes at Box Office by Wayne Fosse

STEP UP - $21.1 Box Office Hit

(c) Disney

The teen dancing movie "Step Up," had an strong debut opening in cinemas this weekend. The film shocked box office observers over the weekend by taking in $21.1 million on fewer than 2500 screens over the US weekend. "Step" Starring newcomers Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan capitalized on a popular soundtrack and online marketing campaigns to reach its mostly teen audience and give Disney its third summer hit following "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Cars."

Tyler Gage (CHANNING TATUM) is a rebel from the wrong side of Baltimore¹s tracks. Him and his two buddies, Mac and Skinny, are just sliding by through life, enjoying basketball, parties, and dancing while stealing cars for an income and maybe going to school every once in a while. After a bit of good-natured vandalism at the nearby ultra-elite Maryland School of Arts, Gage lands himself in front of a judge, and is sentenced to 200 hours of community service outside the school.

Nora (JENNA DEWAN) is a privileged ballet dancer attending the school and the only thing standing in the way of her obviously brilliant future is finding a great dance partner for her senior showcase.

Gage's skills as a gifted street dancer draw Nora¹s attention. Now, as sparks fly between them, both on and off stage, Tyler realizes he has just one performance to prove that he can step up to a life far larger than he ever imagined.

"It's great when a movie like this so over-performs in the marketplace," said Chuck Viane, president of Disney's Buena Vista Distribution. "The filmmakers knew who their audience was and for $12 million made a film that was extremely pleasing. "We had so many sold-out auditoriums, it was like the old days and watching the public embrace a movie."
