2006, US, 87mins , director: Phil Bertelsen.

BEYOND THE STEPS follows the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater during a pivotal period in its history, one that has the company venturing abroad as well as establishing new roots at home. The documentary marks a moment of both growth and reflection, as the troupe travels to Russia after an absence of nearly 20 years, moves into a state-of-the-art custom facility, called by The New York Times "the largest in the country devoted exclusively to dance," and creates a new ballet entitled Love Stories, choreographed by longtime AAADT artistic director Judith Jamison in collaboration with hip-hop pioneer Rennie Harris and modern dance maverick Robert Battle. Under the steadfast leadership of Jamison, the making of a new dance and a new home serve as symbols of the remarkable foundation that Ailey built, and of the vibrancy that defines the company today.

Wed 21st screening followed by interview with director Phil Bertelsen by Donald Hutera.

Voyage (2006)
A journey into the universe of the British choreographer Russell Maliphant. An abstract dance through solos, duos and quintet. Movements are all about power, lightness and emotions..

Paul Leo talks to Voyage choreographer Russell Maliphant about his work.

. Russell Maliphant trained at the Royal Ballet School and graduated into Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet before leaving to pursue a career in independent dance, working with companies such as DV8 Physical Theatre, and Michael Clark & Company. His work builds on this foundation in expanding dance grammar, creating mesmerising, joyful works. The Russell Maliphant Company (founded in 1996) has toured extensively and won numerous awards, including a TimeOut Live Award for ‘Outstanding Collaboration’ for Sheer (2002), the Peoples’ Choice Award from the Festival De La Nouvelle Danse in Montreal (2002), the South Bank Show Award for Dance (2003), the Olivier Award for best new dance production for Broken Fall (2003), and Best Choreography (Modern) at the UK’s 2005 National Dance Awards.

Paul Leo: Which performers or choreographers influenced
your work when growing up?

Russell Maliphant: Depends what you mean by 'growing up'... I wasn't making work till I was already fairly experienced as a performer. When I went to the Royal Ballet School, Kenneth MacMilan was the resident choreographer. He had just made Mayerling, with David Wall & Lynn Seymour - I remember them as being superb, and I was really inspired by the pas de deux work.

I went to see many performances of Manon, Romeo & Juliet, Concerto, Gloria, Requiem and others. I also performed in a lot of creations by David Bintley, but it wasn't till several years after that that I began to make work. Laurie Booth & Lloyd Newson were influential to me.

Paul Leo You choreographed the pas de trois Broken Fall for Sylvie Guillem and George Piper Dancers. What was it like choreographing such a demanding piece like that?

Russell Maliphant: It was fun. Great performers, great collaborators - what could be better.

Paul Leo A lot of your recent work seems to incorporate yoga, tai chi and capoeira. We're you surprised how well audiences are responding it ?

Russell Maliphant: I just work with what has interested me. I have spent many years exploring elements of those disciplines and it is gratifying when a piece is well received.it.

Paul Leo You have worked on some films for TV previously. What is the process like adapting your work from stage to screen?

Russell Maliphant: In my experience, it's always been different. I've worked on 5 adaptations of stage works for film - and the process has never been the same.
There are frameworks within which a project is set out, that influence many elements - the available time, the budget, the collaborative experience, etc and those invariably change each time.

MIRROR DANCE Co-produced and co-directed by Frances McElroy and Maria Rodriguez and edited by Ann Tegnell. Cuban identical twins Margarita and Ramona de Saa grew up to become acclaimed ballerinas with the National Ballet of Cuba. Once inseparable, their relationship disintegrated as one sister left for the United States while the other embraced the Cuban Revolution. This film is the story of these two women, forever linked by birth and dance, but struggling to overcome a deep rift between them and the two nations alike. Shot in the USA and Cuba over a period of four years, Mirror Dance reveals some of the complexities of the sisters' relationship… the worlds in which they live, the choices each has made and the conflicts each has endured...as they hope that they will one day reconcile.

MONDAY 19th MARCH 2007

West Side Story (1961) is an energetic, widely-acclaimed, melodramatic musical - a modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, although the setting is the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s with conflict between rival street gangs rather than families. West Side Story is still one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever created, and the finest musical film of the 60s. It arrived at a time when the silver screen was realizing tremendous competition from TV and other genres of cinematic entertainment.
